Yet the dark shadow of death and destruction still clung like a shroud to Europe. Russia plunged into a bloody cultural revolution that would eat away at the Rodina for decades to come. In September 1939 what had been building up since the end of the Great War finally boiled over. The German Wehrmacht supported by the Luftwaffe crossed into Poland under the pretense of defending the Fatherland from Polish aggression.
